Dr. Sherine Gabriel is executive vice president of ASU Health and a University Professor of the Future of Health Outcomes and Medicine in the College of Health Solutions with a joint appointment in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at ASU. Dr. Gabriel has served an instrumental role in the development of the new ASU School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering and the School of Public Health Technology, which will accept students in 2026. A key clinical partnership has been established with HonorHealth and the medical school will incorporate engineering into the curriculum. Graduates will earn an MD and a master of science in medical engineering.

Dr. Gabriel has dedicated her career to improving health and advancing innovative education, training and equitable health outcomes as a medical systems leader, an educator, a population scientist and a clinical rheumatologist. Her 26-year career with Mayo Clinic included roles such as the dean of its medical school and many other leadership positions. Before that, she had been dean of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and president of Rush University in Chicago, a nationally ranked academic medical center that has a medical college, college of nursing, college of health sciences and a graduate college. Dr. Gabriel’s research program is internationally recognized, largely funded by the National Institutes of Health and has resulted in more than 250 publications addressing the risks, costs, determinants and outcomes of rheumatic diseases. In 2020, she was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
